General Charles H. Taylor - 1846–1921

Maria ThomasGeneral Taylor was the founder and managing editor (for more than 50 years) of The Boston Globe newspaper. His daughter, Grace Taylor Armstrong, moved to Hampton after her marriage and, in 1925, she gave the community The Charles H. Taylor Memorial Library. For more than 60 years, the building served as Hampton’s Public Library until the much larger new library was built next door. In 1989, The Charles H. Taylor Memorial Library officially became The Charles H. Taylor Arts Center. It is still owned by the estate of Mrs. Armstrong and leased to the City of Hampton to be run as the
Arts Center.
